What is the difference between API 610 BB3 and BB5 multi-stage pumps?

2026-09-18

1. The core structural differences between BB3 and BB5

BB3: axially split multi-stage pump

BB3 adopts an axially split pump casing. The pump casing is divided into upper and lower parts along the axis center line. The impeller is usually arranged symmetrically to balance most of the axial force. The rotor, impeller and sealing components can be inspected after disassembling the pump casing. Generally, there is no need to dismantle the inlet and outlet pipes.

This structure is easy to maintain and is suitable for medium-high pressure, large flow and continuous conveying devices that require regular maintenance. However, the axial split surface is long, and under extremely high pressure or high temperature thermal cycle conditions, the pump casing stiffness, sealing surface machining accuracy and bolt pre-tightening requirements are higher.

BB5: radially split double-shell multi-stage pump

BB5 usually adopts a double-shell structure with a cylindrical outer shell and a multi-stage inner core, also called a barrel pump or barrel pump. The high-pressure medium is borne by the thick-walled outer cylinder, and the internal pump core is responsible for completing multi-stage pressurization.

BB5 has a more complete pressure-bearing boundary, and the radial split structure can reduce the risk of leakage at the pump casing joint surface under high-pressure and high-temperature conditions. The internal pump core can be extracted as a whole during maintenance, but the equipment manufacturing accuracy, installation requirements and initial purchase cost are usually higher than BB3.

2. Which working conditions are more suitable for BB3?

When the project meets the following conditions, BB3 can be evaluated first:

  1. The flow rate is large and the lift is high, but the system pressure and temperature do not reach extreme ranges;

  2. Users hope to check the rotor without disassembling the inlet and outlet pipes;

  3. The device needs to regularly open the pump casing to inspect the impeller, interstage seals and bearings;

  4. While meeting reliability, the project is sensitive to procurement costs;

  5. The medium is mainly refined oil, crude oil, process water, mine drainage or general chemical liquids.

BB3 is not a low-level solution. For pipeline transportation, oilfield water injection and industrial high-pressure transportation systems with reasonably matched parameters, the axially split structure can take into account efficiency, flow capacity and maintenance convenience.

3. Under which working conditions should BB5 be preferred?

The following conditions are generally more suitable for using BB5:

  1. The outlet pressure, inlet pressure or system design pressure is relatively high;

  2. Transporting high-temperature hydrocarbons, boiler feed water or flammable and explosive media;

  3. The device has frequent heating, cooling or obvious Sensible heat cycle;

  4. Once the pump leaks or shuts down, it will cause high safety and production losses;

  5. Requires long-term continuous operation, and emphasizes the integrity of the pressure boundary;

  6. The project specifications clearly require radially split double-casing pumps.

In working conditions such as oil refining and hydrogenation, high-pressure boiler water supply, high-pressure processes in coal chemical industry, and water injection on offshore platforms, BB5's high-pressure sealing capability and operational reliability are usually more important.

4. Common purchasing issues

Is BB5 definitely better than BB3?

No. BB5 has stronger pressure-bearing and high-temperature resistance, but the price, manufacturing cycle and maintenance requirements are also higher. For large flow conditions with moderate pressure and temperature, BB3 may be more economical and easier to maintain.

Can both pumps be used for boiler feed water?

Yes, but it needs to be judged based on pressure, temperature, cavitation conditions and continuous operation level. High-temperature and high-pressure boiler feed water is usually more likely to be BB5; systems with relatively mild parameters and emphasis on ease of maintenance can be evaluated for BB3.

What information do I need to provide when making an inquiry?

At least the medium name and composition, flow range, inlet and outlet pressure, head, temperature, density, viscosity, steam pressure, corrosiveness, solid content, NPSHa, operation mode, explosion-proof level, power supply conditions and applicable standards should be provided.

5. Feiyue Pump Industry BB3 and BB5 solutions

Feiyue Pump Industry can provide BB3 axially split multi-stage pump and BB5 double-casing multi-stage pump selection solutions according to API 610 requirements for oil refining, petrochemical, coal chemical industry, electric power, oil field water injection and high-pressure industrial processes.

In the selection stage, engineers will comprehensively evaluate flow, head, inlet pressure, medium temperature, materials, shaft seal system, NPSH and continuous operation requirements, and provide performance curves, structural configurations, material solutions and test requirements. For projects with ordinary medium, high pressure, large flow and emphasis on maintenance convenience, BB3 can be evaluated first; for high temperature, high pressure, flammable media and critical continuous devices, it is recommended that BB5 be evaluated first.
