Why API Is the 610 pump more suitable for critical working conditions?
Pay more attention to the alignment stability under high temperature conditions
The temperature of the medium in oil refining and petrochemical units may change significantly. API 610 horizontal cantilever pumps often use a centerline support structure, so that the pump casing can expand evenly around the centerline of the shaft after being heated, reducing the thermal offset between the pump shaft, coupling and driver.
ANSI pumps are often supported by feet. When the medium temperature is high, hot and cold cycles are frequent, or the pipeline thermal load is large, it is necessary to focus on reviewing the thermal expansion, base stiffness and thermal alignment conditions.
More comprehensive control of machinery reliability
API 610 projects typically require a systematic assessment of shaft stiffness, rotor dynamics, bearing systems, vibration, seal chambers, coupling protection and auxiliary piping. The purpose is not to simply increase the thickness of the pump body, but to reduce the risk of vibration, leakage and unplanned downtime within the specified operating range.
ANSI pumps can also be equipped with corrosion-resistant materials, mechanical seals and flushing systems, but the specific configuration is usually determined by the manufacturer's standards and procurement data sheets, and the reliability level cannot be judged solely by the name "ANSI pump".
Different inspection and documentation requirements
API 610 pump projects generally require performance testing, vibration testing, hydrostatic testing, material certification, non-destructive testing, and data sheets and performance curves. Depending on the media hazard and project specifications, witness testing or special inspections may also be added.
ANSI pumps can also perform similar tests, but usually need to be specified by the purchaser during the inquiry stage. If only quotations are compared without harmonizing the scope of testing, materials and documentation, the price results are often not comparable.
What are the advantages of ANSI pumps?
An important advantage of ANSI pumps is the standardization of installation dimensions. Pumps of the same specifications usually have unified interfaces and basic dimensions, which facilitates replacement of products from different manufacturers and shortens spare parts procurement and equipment modification cycles.
For chemical transportation conditions with normal or medium temperature, moderate pressure, and low continuous operation risk, ANSI pumps tend to have better purchasing economics.
However, the dimensions comply with ASME B73.1, which does not mean that the pump automatically meets API 610 requirements in terms of pressure bearing capacity, vibration, bearing life and inspection depth.
How to choose between API 610 pump and ANSI pump?
Priority for working conditions of API 610 pumps
When the following situations occur, API 610 pumps should be considered:
The project specification clearly requires API 610;
Used in key installations of oil refining, petrochemicals or oil and gas;
Transporting high temperature, high pressure, flammable, explosive or toxic media;
Unplanned downtime opportunities Cause greater safety or production losses;
The working conditions include high pipeline loads or frequent temperature changes;
Special structures such as OH2, BB2, BB3, BB5, VS4 or VS6 are required.
The operating conditions of ANSI pumps can be selected
The following operating conditions can usually evaluate ANSI pumps:
General chemical raw materials, solvents or utility media transportation;
Temperature and pressure are within the normal range;
Pumps are non-critical equipment or have backup pumps;
The project attaches great importance to standard size, quick replacement and spare parts versatility;
Full life cycle cost assessment shows that there is no need to adopt API 610 configuration.
The final decision should not be based solely on industry name but also on flow, head, media density, viscosity, corrosivity, solids content, temperature, inlet pressure, NPSHA, hours of operation and unit risk level.
