The structure and core value of the two pumps
Stainless steel chemical pump
The pump casing, impeller, shaft and other main flow-passing parts of the stainless steel pump are made of stainless steel, duplex steel or higher grade alloys, and are suitable for transporting acids, alkalis, salt solutions, organic liquids and other corrosive media. Conventional structures use mechanical seals to prevent media from leaking from the rotating shaft. The technology is mature, has a wide range of applications, and the initial investment is usually low. However, mechanical seals are also wearing parts and potential leak points that need to be inspected and replaced.
Magnetic drive pump
The magnetic drive pump transmits power through the outer magnetic rotor, isolation sleeve and inner magnetic rotor. The pump shaft does not need to pass through the pressure-bearing pump casing, so the traditional dynamic shaft seal is eliminated. Its core advantage is not naturally greater corrosion resistance, but improved media tightness, especially suitable for toxic, volatile, flammable, high-value or environmentally sensitive liquids. API 685 is for sealless centrifugal pumps used in the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries, including magnetic drive pumps.
Core difference
| Comparison project | Mechanical seal stainless steel pump | Magnetic pump |
|---|---|---|
| Main advantages | Corrosion resistance, economical and versatile | No traditional dynamic shaft seal, high sealing |
| Leakage risk | Depends on sealing status | Leakage risk at shaft extension is significantly reduced |
| Maintenance focus | Mechanical seal | Sliding bearings, magnetic components and internal circulation |
| Solid adaptability | Usually more flexible | More sensitive to particles and crystallization |
| Dry running | Depending on the specific design | Dry running is generally prohibited |
| Initial cost | Usually low | Usually high |
Magnetic drive does not mean corrosion resistance, and the materials of flow-passing parts must still be evaluated separately; stainless steel magnetic pumps have both corrosion-resistant structures and shaft seal-less transmission.
What working conditions are suitable for stainless steel pumps?
Conventional stainless steel chemical pumps are often more practical when the medium is corrosive but less dangerous, the mechanical seal can be safely adapted, or the liquid contains more particles and is prone to crystallization. This type of pump is also more economical if the equipment is installed in an area that is easily accessible for maintenance and the project emphasizes initial investment, but seal replacement and shutdown maintenance should still be included in the cost assessment.
Which working conditions are more suitable for magnetic pumps?
When a small amount of leakage may also cause safety accidents, environmental pollution, product loss or production interruption, priority should be given to evaluating magnetic pumps, such as toxic, flammable, volatile, expensive and high-risk chemical media. However, magnetic pumps usually rely on media to lubricate and cool internal bearings and components. Media containing particles, easy to deposit, or easy to crystallize require special evaluation. Products that are not specially designed cannot be run dry.
What parameters should be confirmed when purchasing?
Hydraulic and media parameters
Minimum, normal and maximum flow rates should be provided, as well as the total head including static head, pipeline friction, and pressure drop of valves and equipment. At the same time, state the name of the medium, exact composition and concentration, temperature, density, viscosity, vapor pressure, particle size, solid concentration and crystallization tendency. Simply filling in "acid liquid" or "chemical liquid" is not enough to complete reliable material selection.
System and safety conditions
It is also necessary to confirm the suction conditions, NPSH, operating pressure, motor and power supply, hazardous area level, continuous or intermittent operation mode, and allowable leakage standards. Complete data helps determine materials, sealing methods, magnetic coupling torque, power and hydraulic models to avoid premature failure, excessive energy consumption or risk of leakage.
How to make the final choice?
First select the material of the flow-passing parts based on corrosiveness, and then determine whether the leakage consequences are acceptable; if high sealing is required, evaluate the magnetic drive; if it contains solids or is easy to crystallize, focus on checking the compatibility of the internal circulation and bearings; and finally verify the flow, head, temperature, pressure, viscosity and NPSH. Pump type cannot be determined by name or price alone.
